Description
Gleditsia sinensis, the fruit or seed of a plant in the genus Gleditsia of the legume family, has medicinal, cleaning, landscaping, and industrial uses. Its medicinal value is mainly reflected in its expectorant and antitussive properties, as well as its ability to dispel wind and kill parasites. The saponin components give it natural cleaning properties, and it is also widely used in landscaping and industrial raw material production.
I. Medicinal Value
Expectorant and Antitussive 1. Gleditsia sinensis used medicinally (such as in the traditional Chinese medicine “Soapberry Thorn”) can thin phlegm and relieve cough, often used as an adjunct treatment for respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and asthma. Note: Internal use of Gleditsia sinensis requires processing to reduce toxicity and should only be used under the guidance of a doctor.
Antitussive and Insecticidal 2. Externally, a decoction or powder of Gleditsia sinensis can relieve skin problems such as eczema and scabies. Its saponin components have a certain inhibitory effect on some fungi and parasites. Avoid contact with mucous membranes when using externally; those with allergies should use with caution.
II. Cleaning Functions
**Natural Detergent:** 1. Soap pods contain saponins, which produce foam when in contact with water. They can replace chemical detergents for cleaning clothes, tableware, etc., and are environmentally friendly with low skin irritation.
2. Hair Care: Traditionally, soap pods are boiled in water for washing hair to help remove dandruff and reduce oil secretion, making it suitable for people with sensitive scalps.
